Intro: 

The battle of Bunker Hill was fought on June 17,1775 during the siege of Boston in the early stages of the American Revolutionary war nearby Breed's Hill. This was fought in Charlestown, MA. The battle was between Colonial and British troops. The Battle of Bunker Hill happened because Boston was being besieged by thousands of American. The British were trying to keep control of their valuable sea ports. 

Facts:

  • The battle of Bunker Hill was named after Bunker Hill in Charles town.

  • Elevation of 62 feet

  • Rather than immediately fortifying the hills on the peninsula, had withdrawn those troops to Boston the day after the battle turning Charlestown into a no man’s land.

    • No one lands is land that is unoccupied or is under dispute between parties who leave it unoccupied due to fear.

  • The plan that William Howe, john Burgoyne, and Henry Clinton came up with on June 12 to break out of the city. They began with the taking of Dorchester Neck, fortifying and then marching in the colonial forces stationed in Roxbury. Once the southern flank had been secured, Charlestown heights would be taken and the forces in Cambridge driven away.

  • The British soldiers at the Battle of Bunker Hill were led by General William Howe.

  • The Soldiers at the Battle of Bunker Hill were led by Colonel William Prescott.

  •  Americans soldiers where low on ammunition she they were told: “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes!”

  • American solders prepared to attack the night before the battle.  They tried to fortify their position by building a six – foot high wall. This type of wall was called Redoubt.

  • Although the British won the Battle the British General William Howe was impressed by the redoubt built by the Americans.
